Create your own website and get a place of your own to write what you observe, think and learn. Feeling of owning a website is awesome. Earlier, I used to write on free online article directories like HubPages, Triond, Bukisa, there are numerous of them. To be honest, I did learn couple of things while writing on these platforms, but if you own it, there is nothing better than that. I have followed simple steps to build my own website and I never thought that it would be this easy. I always believe that sharing your knowledge, increase it manifolds, so here are the steps that I followed to create my own website.
Step 1: Choose Domain Name For Your Own Website
Well, a Domain Name in simplest of its definition is a string of alphanumeric characters that maps to one or more IP Addresses to identify a site on the internet. It is always easy to remember a catchy name rather than a numeric IP Address. You need to identify a Domain Name for your own website and then get it registered as explained in Step 2 below.
If you are planning to write for a niche topic, then you can do a research on it and decide on a suitable domain name. For people who are yet to explore their topics of interest, I count myself here, can decide on a name that describes them or probably their thoughts. I decided on Vertical Horizons for two reasons, first, I am on way to explore new horizons in The Web and second, I find it classy and catchy. Please feel free to comment on this, I always appreciate to have feedback from readers.
Step 2: Register Domain Name
Now, once you have decided on a domain name, you need to get it registered. This step of registering a domain name is an important one as you can use a domain name only after it is approved by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). A domain name can be registered with various domain name registrars such as GoDaddy, Name, Namecheap. You need to pay an annual fee for registering your domain but that is very minimal to pay for your passion. I registered Vertical Horizons with Name and got a very fair and cheap deal.
Do not worry if you are not getting .com after the chosen domain name, .in, .net or .org will also do good from SEO perspective. If none of them is free, you can tweak your domain name a little or choose another one.
Of course, there are lot of services available where you can get a domain name for free, but please note that you are getting a sub-domain and not a domain. Weebly is one such site, which allows you to get your own domain name for free in few minutes (of course it is a sub-domain name). For instance, if you have chosen your domain name to be “TechnoFreak”, Weebly will give you the domain name as “http://technofreak.weebly.com”.
I have learn that it is always better to have a domain name rather than a sub-domain name. It will give you more authority as a site owner. So go ahead, pay a little fee and get a domain name for your own website.
Step 3: Hosting Your Own Website
After you have registered your domain name, you need to have space on some server to host your website. I got very good feedback from my friends on HostGator and my personal experience with them has been wonderful so far. Their 24×7 online customer support is really worth to speak about.
You can select various plans here and choose a suitable one for you. You may start with Hatchling Plan for a month or an year.
After successful registration with HostGator, you will see a verification number; do not forget to note it down as it will be required for further communication with HostGator. You will also receive an e-mail, sharing information related to login credentials, control panel and name servers. Keep this mail safe.
Step 4: Updating Name Servers With Domain Registrar
Now, you need to go back to Domain Registrar, you have registered your domain with and update the name servers received in mail, in Step 3. This is an important step to let both these guys, Domain Registrar and Website Host, know about each other.
Enter your own website name in the browser and you have got your own website…!!
Step 5: Installing WordPress
WordPress is a publishing platform that helps you in creating a wonderful blog or a site. You can download and install wordpress by visiting this link. There is a good step by step guide to install wordpress on your site.
However, I chose to install wordpress on my site using sevice provided by HostGator. You need to login to CPanel and then select QuickInstall under Software/Services. Select WordPress from left menu bar and get your wordpress installed in few minutes. These services may differ among various Website Hosts.
You will receive a mail after successful installation of WordPress on your website, sharing the login credentials.
Step 6: Applying A WordPress Theme
After installing wordpress, this is a time to make our website look the way we want. Go to the WordPress login screen, generally located at http://yoursite.com/wp-login.php or http://yoursite.com/wp-admin/ (note: if WordPress has been installed in a subdirectory, the login screen should be located at http://yoursite.com/subdirectory/wp-login.php). Enter your username and password (received in a mail in step 5). Select Appearance from left bar and then Themes. Go ahead, search a theme of your choice and install it in seconds.
Step 7: Installing WordPress Plugins
Plugins can extend WordPress to do almost anything you can imagine. It is very important to decide which plugins to install. I referred this link to install top 10 wordpress plugins. I will be installing lot more wordpress plugins on my way.
Now you are ready with your own website, go ahead and start posting your thoughts and learning.
This is how I created Vertical Horizons, and I am very happy to do it. I hope you find this article informative and useful. Please feel free to ask any questions or providing your suggestions and feedback. Thank You.
