Cleanup & Case Functions In Excel – MS Excel Functions Tutorial Part 5

So far we have learnt Mathematical Functions and Text Functions in Excel and how to use these functions. In this post, we will learn about clean up and case functions in excel.

Cleanup Functions

Function # 1 TRIM

This function is used for removing extra blank spaces from a string. This is often useful when we have unformatted text as extra blank spaces may cause error in formulas.

Let us consider a string “How  are     you” in cell L5.

=TRIM(L5) will return the string “How are you” with no extra blank spaces!

Function # 2 CLEAN

This function is similar to the TRIM function but this function is used for removing non-printable characters such as program codes etc which appear in files when imported from other sources.

Case Functions

Function # 1 UPPER

This function converts a string to upper case. Let us consider a string “ I am fine” in cell O5.

=UPPER(O5)

This function will return “IAM FINE”.

Function # 2 LOWER

This function converts a string to lower case. Let us consider a string “HOW ARE YOU” in cell Q5.

=LOWER(Q5)

This function will return “how are you”.

Function # 3 PROPER

This function converts a string to “proper or appropriate case”. Let us consider a string “good ConCept” in cell S5.

=PROPER(S5)

This function will return “Good Concept”.

In our next post we will learn about Logical Functions.
